Before you get worried, this post probably isn’t what you think. I suggest reading it all the way through. 🙂
I realize I’m a snob when it comes to certain things. For example, I only use certain brands of products for some things like dish detergent, or paper towels.   I also realize I’m a snob when it comes to bath towels. Let me explain.
Friday, I bought all new towels for 2 bathrooms. Ouch. That can be a big purchase all at once! I bought really nice towels. The thickest ones the store had. But when I used them for the first time, I realized just how much they were worth it! And how much I wish I would have done it sooner. There’s something about a really nice, soft, thick towel. You can just tell the difference in quality sometimes.
You see, we have 9 people in our family. We go through a lot of towels each day!  I had nice towels, but they were 5 years old and you can imagine how much use and abuse they took during that time. 8-9 people a day using them, washed nearly every day…. Although they were once nice towels, with time, they naturally got thinner and a little scratchy. They lost their effectiveness. Even the kids noticed and complained about it.
I put it off for a while (kind of like the new water heater purchase, which is still one of my favorite purchases in the past few years!) and just made do with what we had. I had all kinds of reasons to justify using them: it’s expensive to replace that many towels, they were a nice quality when I bought them, they still “worked”, we had other things to use our money for, etc.  You get the idea.
But let’s face it. They were past their prime and ready for a change in purpose. Like instead, using them to wash the car,  having extra towels for the pool area, cleaning up spills….
I think we’re like that in many ways with things in our life. Now, I’m not saying that everything has to be the best of the best. I don’t mean that at all. But often, there is a difference in quality or usefulness in the things we have in our life.
For instance, we may need to make a change but we’re kind of stuck in a rut of doing the same thing, using the same thing, etc. It can be easier to not deal with change. Like my towels—they were still functional and I could get by with them, but they were just “good”. I could have “better” or “best”.
Sometimes we have to stand up for ourselves and be a bit of a snob and say, “I’m not going to settle for less than the best in my life”. It’s worth it to be selective and know what our priorities and choices are. Otherwise we can end up saying yes to everything and living in frustration or even just in mediocrity. Especially if we’re living out someone else’s values instead of our own.
I’m thinking of things like how we use our time, what we do, where we go, where we invest our skills and talents, who we allow to influence our life, what we say yes to…..and what we say no to. You get the idea.
Is there an area where you need to be a snob?
- Anything that you’re making do with or justifying in your life?
- Anything that if you just made that leap and changed it you’d notice a difference?
- Anything you’d regret if you stuck with it forever and never traded out for something more efficient
Sometimes something as simple as changing a towel can make a huge impact on our day-today life.
What “towels” do you need to consider replacing?
